Allow them to experience their journey on their own terms and in their own time. Be engaged and ask questions, but also know they may not know or be ready to share every answer.

Ask them if they prefer new or different identifiers or pronouns—or even none at all. Over time, as they learn more about themselves, they may readjust their labels. If you slip up and make a mistake, don’t dwell on it; simply self-correct and apologize.

Self-education is a powerful act of compassion. It broadens your understanding and worldview and takes the pressure off your LGBTQ friends to be the “expert” or “teacher.”
